Almost ten years ago, the Highlands Elementary School consulted with the Hazlet Township Public Schools to investigate if business office and related services could be provided in an effort to increase the quality of services at a lower cost. At first, the relationship was just in theory, until January 2011 when Hazlet worked closely with Highlands to design an approach intended to meet the needs and budget parameters of the Highlands Elementary School. Since that time, shared business services have expanded in Hazlet and across the State of New Jersey. Hazlet now services two districts with Shared Business Services contracts; we have provided Superintendent Services and payroll services to other districts as well. Technology and custodial services are now provided to Hazlet Township and possible construction services are set for the future. Trough this approach, Shared Business Services has helped leverage cost savings, and discovered opportunities to improve systems and processes as an added value to the partnership. This workshop will cover the types of shared services permitted in New Jersey, lessons learned and benefits generated for all parties involved.
