After the Fire: The Rebirth of the James Monroe Elementary School

On March 22, 2014, a massive fire, determined to be lit by a discarded cigarette, burned down the James Monroe Elementary School in Edison. On January 3, 2017, students and staff returned to a completely reconstructed James Monroe School. Although it took less than three years for the board to rebuild, this time period was not without a series of overwhelming obstacles involving various personnel matters, emergency public contracting, extraordinarily difficult lease negotiations, and even litigation with the board's insurance carrier. Hear from the superintendent, board president, and board attorney what it took to bring the students and staff of James Monroe "home."
