Research suggests that the board-superintendent relationship has an overwhelming impact on determining the effectiveness and efficiency of education in schools. Using the National School Board Association’s “Key Work of School Boards,” we will explore the roles of the board and superintendent, present real-life scenarios for discussion, identify “what went right” and “what went wrong,” and discuss strategies for building a positive working relationship with the board/superintendent team. Participants will discuss the importance of board training, communication, and establishing norms, and gain a better understanding of the difference between oversight and management of the schools.
