Inclusive education has 33 years of research support showing that it is more effective for instructing students with disabilities than self-contained or out-of-district placements. Unfortunately, New Jersey ranks 49th out of 50 states based on rates of inclusion and out-of-district placement. New Jersey spends close to a billion dollars on out-of-district placements at over 140 private special education schools. There are school districts in New Jersey that spend 10-20 percent of their overall budget on out-of-district placements. This presentation will review the importance of inclusive education financially and through research. We will review how other states include students with disabilities at close to double the rate that we do, and will instruct board members to identify how much their districts are spending to educate students out-of-district.
