Creating Student Driven Academies: Beginning the Journey

Toms River Regional School District is designing student-driven, problem-based Career Academies starting this school year. Teachers are rethinking curriculum so that students are tackling real-world, multi-subject, open-ended problems and using a design process to create solutions. Instructionally, teachers are designing structures and strategies that put students in charge of their own learning while transformationally using technology. Join us as we share the beginning of our change process: the steps, successes, and challenges.

Solving Education's Wicked Problems with Concept Mapping

Problems in Education are “Wicked Problems” or at the least, they are part of them (see https://goo.gl/BHksKP). Solving our “Wicked” educational problems requires a different way of looking at our issues, literally! Participants will learn the strategies of visual concept mapping and visual messaging used by Howell Township Public Schools. These strategies can be used by anyone to create a clearer vision of both the problems faced, and the solutions needed by a school district.

True North: Maintaining Our Core Values in a Climate of Change
The education landscape continues to shift with changing standards, technology, and student needs. As we strive to be innovative, it is also critical that we maintain our core values to ensure we consider the whole child - students that are healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged. Join us to discuss prioritization strategies and protocols for professional practice to help your school/district remain focused on your true north in a climate of change.

Beyond 1 to 1: The Pathway to Future Ready

To support New Jersey schools as “Future Ready”, Future Ready Schools has created a framework of 7 gears for success: Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment; Use of Space and Time; Robust Infrastructure; Data and Privacy; Community Partnerships; Personalized Professional Learning; & Budget and Resources. Participants will see how the Howell Township Public Schools gathered a team of stakeholders, comprised of students, staff, parents, community members, members of the Board of Education, and administration to go through a process that inextricably connects all 7 gears. Concrete examples of interconnected gears will be provided with actual results of those cohesive efforts. Time will be given for a district-supported panel discussion during which participants can apply elements of this workshop to their own district efforts towards being “Future Ready”.
