A Myriad of Factors that Impact Student Achievement
If helping students learn and achieve was simply about curriculum and instruction, the achievement gap would not be as difficult to close as it is. This session will introduce participants to other factors that can influence and inhibit learning, such as inherent bias, student management practices, land use laws and more. In addition, a collaborative process that districts can use to identify specific challenges and develop actions plans will be discussed.

Getting Started with New Jersey Tiered System of Supports (NJTSS)
In the fall of 2016, the New Jersey Department of Education launched guidance and resources for implementing the New Jersey Tiered System of Supports (NJTSS), a framework of supports and interventions to improve student achievement, based on the core components of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support and the three-tier prevention logic of Response to Intervention (RTI). This session will include a brief overview of the NJTSS framework; resources for getting started with implementation; and will provide an opportunity to hear the experiences of a New Jersey school district currently implementing a tiered approach to intervention. With a foundation of strong district and school leadership, a positive school culture, and climate and family and community engagement, NJTSS builds on I&RS (intervention and referral services) and gives schools structure to meet the academic, behavioral, health, enrichment and social/emotional needs of all students.

Reciprocal Teachers: Parent-Sponsored Enrichment Programming
Campbell School has transformed its learning culture through different programming initiatives. One way this is accomplished is through the Parent-Teacher Organization's Whole School Enrichment Program entitled, "Spring Extravaganza." This program focuses on a particular theme or topic, such as "How It Works - STEM Lessons for Our Students." Then, about 125-150 parents volunteer their time to choose a topic aligned with the theme, plan lesson presentations, and prepare for "Spring Extravaganza Day." On the day before Spring Break, parents conduct a full-scale takeover of the school and present these enrichment lessons to visiting classes. Parents step into the teaching roles, while teachers learn along with their students. This session will walk participants through the program's development, implementation, and lessons learned on how to better implement the program in years to come. This successful venture has transformed the school community and develops closer connections between the school and home. Attendees will gain insight and receive the tools necessary to replicate this program within their own school or district setting.

From Novice to Tenured: A Four-Year Plan
Studies show that a significant amount of teachers quit within the first five years. The Hazlet Township School District has implemented a comprehensive, four-year novice teacher program to help ensure our newest staff members never feel that "burnout." With the help of administration and teacher leaders, all certificated novice staff work through a series of intense activities over the course of four years to build lasting relationships with their students and with their peers. This extensive program has minimal impact on our district's budget but maximum impact on our teacher retention rates.

Innovation in Education -- The Next Generation of Ambitious Teaching & Learning to Drive Student Achievement
Teaching effectiveness is recognized by how well students are learning. Teacher effectiveness places the classroom teacher in the spotlight as the guiding influence when defining academic achievement for students. Looking beyond basic teacher behaviors, there has been much criticism on the idea of teachers’ own belief systems and attitudes toward teaching quality that drives student achievement. In a 21st century changing world, how do we provide the support needed for our staff to create a risk-taking culture that helps both the practitioner and student body learn through experimentation, self-reflection and problem solving? Through a strategic collaborative model, districts can create a job-embedded learning environment where both teachers and students take risks to grow and achieve success by demonstrating mastery of skill and concept. In turn, a culture of innovation is created where students are able to conceptualize, analyze, synthesize, and present their solutions to problems, which supports the ideas and high expectations of the NJ Student Learning Standards, PARCC, and College and Career Readiness standards.

Student Safety Data System
The New Jersey Department of Education has developed a new system, the Student Safety Data System (SSDS), to replace the Electronic Violence and Vandalism Reporting System (EVVRS) and the Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying – Investigations, Trainings, and Programs (HIB-ITP) system that have been used to collect this data. Changes to the data collected by SSDS were made to focus data collection on the information required for state and federal reporting. Changes to the data entry process were made to simplify the process and make it more user-friendly. This session will provide information on what is being collected starting with the 2017-18 school year, why it is collected and how it is being used.

Be-A-Buddy Program for Students Who Struggle Socially
“Be-A-Buddy” is a reverse inclusion program using typical peers who provide empathetic and dignified social opportunities for students with language and/or social skill needs. Redistrict, Rebalance, Reconfiguration: Leading Change While Prioritizing Students
Enrollment, whether declining or increasing, creates issues of space, time, equity, and access for all students. Often, efforts focus on use of building space, but not the other three key components. The Howell Township Public Schools administrative team will share its journey - the good, the bad, and the ugly - from a down-voted operational redistricting plan, to a successful, student-focused reconfigured grade-band plan. Participants will see data and experience useful change strategies specific to their own district roles and responsibilities.
